Artie Shaw
Orchestra |
The
great Artie Shaw once wrote a book entitled "The Trouble
With Cinderella". It was the autobiography of a complex
musical genius. When Dick Johnson got the call from Artie to
front his orchestra in 1983, Dick was quick to realize that
this was his own Cinderella story.
Dick idolized Artie Shaw, the clarinet titan. The first
big band recording Dick purchased in 1941 was Artie's
"Concerto for Clarinet", which Dick now performs nightly.
Artie Shaw heard a recording of Dick's in 1980 and wrote
a note to Dick's personal manager as follows: "Dick's
clarinet playing as of this time, is the best I've ever
heard, bar nobody, and you can quote me on that, anywhere,
anytime!"

Tommy Dorsey
Orchestra |
|
Jack Leonard sang
with the band for about four years, recording such fine sides
as: “Dedicated To You”, “If It's The Last Thing I Do”, “Little
White Lies”, “You Taught Me To Love Again”, “Once In A While”,
and probably the most famous of all, “Marie”. With the band
singing vocal riffs as Jack sang the straight lyric, “Marie”,
was so successful that he recorded several more standard tunes
with the same formula. They include “Who”, “Yearning”, and “East
of the Sun”. “Song of India”, the other side of “Marie”, was
also a huge Dorsey hit.
In
Big Band history, Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra is recognized as one
of the best all-around dance bands. It could swing with the best
of them, and no other band could come close to Tommy's when it
came to playing ballads. Tommy Dorsey, “The Sentimental
Gentleman of Swing,” was a master at creating warm, sentimental,
and always musical moods - at superb dancing and listening
tempos. Tommy sustained these moods through the arrangements of
Paul Weston, Axel Stordahl, and Sy Oliver, and showcased singers
who could project them brilliantly.

BILL HALEY'S COMETS

Originally formed in the late 40s as Bill Haley and The Saddlemen,
BILL HALEY and his COMETS burst onto the music scene in the early 1950's
and was the first group of
musicians to bring rock and roll to the attention of the world. With
Haley's signature split curl haircut and the band's matching dinner
jackets and super energetic stage presence, many fans considered them to
be as revolutionary in the 1950s as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones
were in the 1960s. Rock around The Clock recorded in 1954 was featured
in the smash teen movie "Blackboard Jungle" in 1955 catapulting the song
to #1. Bill and his Comets themselves starred in two of the first ever
movies about the rock music revolution titled "Rock Around The Clock"
and "Don’t Knock The Rock". In the 1950s and 1960s, The Comets toured
the world, performed for Queen Elizabeth II and were featured regularly
on "Dick Clarks American Bandstand." BILL HALEY and his COMETS continued
cranking out hit after hit for their fans including "Shake Rattle and
Roll" "See Ya Later, Alligator" "Rip It Up" "Rock the Joint" and "Crazy
Man Crazy". The Comets received a huge career resurgence in the 1970s
when their music was featuring prominently in the movie "American
Graffiti" and the hugely popular TV show "Happy Days".
In the 21st Century, BILL HALEY'S COMETS live performances feature the
same high energy and raucous rockabilly sound the band has always been
famous for. After Bill's passing in 1981 the band kept performing under
the direction of Drummer John "Bam Bam" Lane, a Comet for 43 years. Bill
Haley's Comets are now lead by long time Comet and lead vocalist Lenny
Longo. According to Longo, their "mission is to keep the Comets music
and tradition alive with an enthusiasm that would have made Bill very
proud of the current Comets".
With fans from 1 to 100 BILL HALEYS COMETS continue to perform up to 100
shows a year at theatres, clubs, fairs and casinos all over the world
for rock and roll fans of all ages. The response to their energetic live
performances and hit packed live show is always fantastic, with standing
ovations and screams for encore after encore.
Due to trademark settlements there are two groups that can legally use
the Bill Haley's Comets name. Be sure to hire Bill Haley's Comets
Featuring Lenny Longo or we will accept no responsibility for the
quality of the show you end up.
Once again Please do not bother us if this happens we have nothing to do
with the other group and are tired of getting calls and complaints from
agents who have used them.
